Overview

MateLingo ("we", "our", or "the app") is a chess-based language learning app. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

Data We Collect

Data stored only on your device:

  • Your game settings (language, board theme, piece style, difficulty)
  • Your vocabulary quiz progress and scores
  • Your Rōmaji toggle preference (Japanese learners)
  • App preferences (dark/light mode, etc.)

All of the above is stored locally using your device's secure storage. None of this data is transmitted to us or any third party.

Data we do not collect:

  • Your name, email address, or any personal identifiers
  • Location data
  • Payment information
  • Device identifiers or advertising IDs
  • Usage analytics or crash reports sent to external servers

Third-Party Services

MateLingo does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. There are no ads in the app.

Children's Privacy

MateLingo is suitable for all ages. Because we do not collect any personal data, there is no special risk to younger users.

Data Deletion

Since all data is stored locally on your device, you can delete it at any time by uninstalling the app. There is no account or server-side data to request deletion of.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes in a future version of the app, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change the language I'm learning? Go to Settings (the gear icon) and select your target language from the Language menu. Supported languages are Spanish, Japanese, German, and French.

How do I change the chess board theme or piece style? In Settings, scroll to the Board section. You can choose from multiple board color themes and piece styles, including five SVG-based piece sets (Staunton, Pixel, Neo, Crystal, Shadow).

What is the Rōmaji toggle? When Japanese is selected as your language, a small "Rōmaji ON / OFF" button appears in the quiz panel. Toggling it on shows the romanized pronunciation of each Japanese word or phrase above the Japanese text, making it easier to learn pronunciation.

My progress seems to have reset — what happened? Progress is stored locally on your device. If you uninstalled and reinstalled the app, or cleared the app's data in your device settings, local progress will be reset. We recommend treating each session as self-contained practice.

The app isn't responding / something looks broken. Try force-quitting the app and reopening it. If the issue persists, please contact us at the email below and describe what you were doing when the problem occurred, and which device and OS version you are using.

Can I suggest new vocabulary or languages? Absolutely — we'd love to hear it. Send suggestions to the support email below.

Is MateLingo free? Yes, MateLingo is free to use with no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
