Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start a new run? From the home screen tap Start Run. If a run is already in progress you will see Continue Run instead. You can abandon an existing run by tapping the abandon option on the home screen — your coins are kept.

How do ability cards work? Every time you send a card to a foundation pile during a floor, you earn a random ability card into your hand. Tap an ability card to use it immediately. Long-press any card to read a description of what it does before playing it.

How do perks work? When you complete a floor you are offered a choice of three perks. The perk you pick stays active for the rest of that run and stacks with any perks you have already chosen.

What are coins for? Coins are earned by completing floors. You spend them in the Grandma Shop to unlock cosmetic packs — new grandma characters, card backs, and table themes. Coins can also be purchased as in-app purchases if you want to unlock cosmetics faster.

Do in-app purchases affect gameplay? No. Every purchase is purely cosmetic (grandma characters, card backs, table themes). You cannot buy an advantage. The full game is free to play.

I bought coins but they did not appear. If a purchase went through on Apple's side but coins did not appear, please contact us with your Apple order number and we will resolve it promptly.

The app crashed or something looks wrong. Please email us with your device model (e.g. iPhone 14), iOS version, and a brief description of what happened. Screenshots are very helpful.

How do I delete my data? All game data (progress, coins, shop unlocks) is stored locally on your device. To delete it, delete the app from your device. There is no account and no data stored on external servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't it translating? The app uses a free translation service that may occasionally be unavailable or slow. Try closing and reopening the app, or wait a minute and search again. If the problem persists, try a different topic. Audio stopped playing when I locked my phone. What do I do? Make sure you have not enabled Low Power Mode, as iOS may restrict background audio in this state. Also check that the app is allowed to run in the background under Settings → LinguaWiki. Background audio requires iOS 14 or later. The voice sounds robotic or is reading in the wrong language. How do I fix this? Go back to the home screen and tap the Voice selector. Choose a different voice for your target language. Enhanced voices (labelled "Enhanced") sound significantly more natural and can be downloaded under Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices on your iPhone. I can't find an article for my topic. Try a broader or more common spelling of your topic. LinguaWiki uses Wikipedia's search, so topics need to have a Wikipedia article. Very niche or recent topics may not return results. The translated text looks wrong or garbled. Translation quality varies by language pair and sentence complexity. For best results, choose topics with straightforward descriptive language (history, science, geography) rather than highly technical or literary content. How do I change the reading order? On the home screen, toggle the switch labelled "[Language] first" before starting a new article. The app will then read your chosen language before English for every sentence. Does the app work offline? No. LinguaWiki requires an internet connection to search Wikipedia and translate sentences. Audio playback of already-loaded sentences continues if you lose connection mid-session, but new articles cannot be loaded offline. Which languages are supported? Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, Arabic, and Hindi.

LinguaWiki is an independent app and is not affiliated with Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation, or Google.
